Right in front of Tobu Nikko Station you fill find Azuma, a restaurant located on the second floor.

They offer different types of soba and snacks, and since it’s really close to the station it’s a good place to stop and eat before going back home after a long day of walking around Nikko.

They also serve Nikko famous yuba (tofu skin) in interesting ways suck as yuba croquette and dumplings, very delicious!

Kanmangafuchi Abyss

Only a few minutes away from Shinkyo Bridge there’s Kanmangafuchi Abyss, a gorge formed by the lava erupted from Mt. Nantai, on the Daiyagawa River.

A row of approximately 70 Jizos are lined up along the river. This group of Jizos is called “Bake-Jizo”, meaning Ghost Jizo, because legend has it that if you try to count them, each time you will end up with a different number.

Also, you will find the legendary “Kanman” characters that are said to be sculptured by Kobo Daishi, a skilled calligrapher.

The statues are across to the Botanical Garden, but it cannot be entered from the abyss.

British Embassy Villa Memorial Park

The British Embassy Villa Memorial Park is on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, which used to be an international summer resort because the embassies and many foreigners built their villas in the area.

This dark wooden building, which served as the British Embassy’s second home from 1896 to 2008, offers a museum tour giving an overview of the site.

On the second floor there is beautiful tea room, where a set of scones and tea supervised by the British Embassy chef is served, and you can enjoy it while contemplating the lake from the panoramic veranda.

Nikko-bori, tallado en madera

El origen del tallado en madera Nikko-bori no está completamente claro, pero se cree que surgió a principios del 1600, cuando el shogun de tercera generación Tokugawa Iemitsu remodeló el edificio principal de Nikko Toshogu.

Este tallado utiliza diferentes técnicas, pero todas se realizan con la misma herramienta conocida como Hikkaki, que es especialmente afilada para el tallado de líneas. Tiene la particularidad de contar con un borde que se dobla aproximadamente 60 grados y se introduce hacia adentro en dirección al tallador, y se cree que fue creada durante la restauración del santuario Nikko Toshogu para raspar el barniz difícil de remover en algunos lugares.

Hoy en día se usa esta técnica para producir una gran variedad de productos, como bandejas, mesas de té, platos pequeños, cajones, mesas, etc. Cada trabajo tiene un estilo artesanal y delicado.
En Nikko se pueden encontrar muchas tiendas que ofrecen estos productos; es muy fácil verlos al caminar desde la estación de tren hacia Toshogu.

Además, el Centro de Artesanías Nikko Woodcarving Village realiza demostraciones sobre la técnica, muy interesantes de ver!

Cómo llegar: Tomar el autobús Tobu desde la estación JR Nikko o la estación Tobu Nikko hasta Kirifuri Kogen y bajar en la parada “Marumi”, desde donde el centro se encuentra a 5 minutos a pie.

Origami Vending Machine

On the main street, really close to Tobu Bus stop number 6 you will find this unique and beautiful machine.

There are 4 different varieties to choose from, starting at ¥300. Gifts with fortune box, cutlery set and more!

Pick one and enjoy making origami. Or take them back home as a perfect souvenier!

Nikko Jingorou Senbei

Los senbei son crackers japoneses hechos de arroz, que suelen prepararse al horno o en la parrilla.
Vienen en diversas formas, tamaños y sabores; generalmente son salados aunque también existen variedades dulces. Los senbei se toman a menudo con té verde como aperitivo informal, y también se acostumbra servirlos a las visitas como cortesía.

Nikko Jingorou Senbei es una tienda tradicional de senbei en Nikko, ubicada muy cerca de Nikko Base. Allí se pueden conseguir en todos sus tamaños y variedades, desde tradicionales hasta dulces o de sabores únicos como wasabi, chile o queso camembert.

PechaKucha Night

PechaKucha Nights are informal and fun meetings where people get together and share their creative ideas, works, thoughts, anything is okay! They are presented in a 20×20 format, where the presenters show 20 images, each for 20 seconds, and they talk along to the images.

PechaKucha nights have already been held in Nikko, and the next one will be on June 29th, so you should definitely stop by if you’re in the area!

Ryuzu Falls

If you are in Oku Nikko, you will surely visit Chuzenji lake and the beatiful area that surrounds it.
Ryuzu Falls is one famous spot, and while you are there you should stop by Ryuzu no Chaya.

This small restaurant offers soba, udon, ramen, yuba, tempura and also delicious dango (sweet Japanese rice dumplings). What makes this place special is the amazing view of Ryuzu Falls, so make sure to be there early to get a good seat!

English menu available, and also a shop to take a look and buy beautiful souveniers before leaving.

Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura

Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura es un parque temático ubicado en Nikko. Ambientado en la época Edo, quienes lo visiten pueden caminar por sus amplias calles, posadas, tiendas, una aldea ninja y residencias de samurais.

También cuentan con una tienda de alquiler de kimonos, donde se puede vestir un traje tradicional al estilo Edo y disfrutar la experiencia al máximo.

Hay una gran variedad de atracciones y performances, como por ejemplo teatro ninja, arquería, paseo en bote y actividades especiales para niños. Un paseo imperdible!
