Ichigo no Sato Cafe – Nikko

So there is a new cafe to discover in Nikko. Ichigo no Sato Cafe offers delicious cakes and sweets made with one of the most famous produce of Tochigi prefecture, Strawberries!
Ichigo-no-Sato Farm is a grower of “Tochihime” strawberries, a variety only grown and consumed in Tochigi.
You can savor cakes, pancakes, waffles, parfaits and so much more. A perfect treat for the afternoon, or even to reward yourself after a whole day of walking around Nikko.

Where? 2-24 Honcho, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture
When? Everyday, from 9:00 to 18:00 (March to November)

Age Yuba Manju en Sakaeya

Sakaeya se encuentra justo frente a la estación Tobu Nikko, y vende el tradicional Ageyubamanju que sólo se puede conseguir en su tienda, abierta hace más de 100 años.

Este delicioso producto es un bollo relleno con pasta de anko (frijol rojo), envuelto en yuba (“piel” de tofu), frito y finalmente cubierto de sal. Esta combinación dulce y salada puede parecer inusual, pero es excepcionalmente sabrosa. ¡Y a 200 yenes por pieza!

Es ideal para comer antes de emprender el regreso luego de un día de paseo en Nikko. Eso sí: esta tienda ha salido en varios programas famosos de televisión, por lo cual no es extraño encontrarse con mucha gente haciendo fila. ¡Lleguen temprano antes de que se acaben!

Long time no see!

Are you enjoying the holidays in Nikko? Would you like to have a delicious breakfast but not sure where to go?

Cottage Inn Restaurant & Bakery at Kanaya Hotel History House offers 4 different options made with local ingredients and freshly baked bread from Kanaya Hotel Bakery.

It is located about a ten minute walk from Shinkyo Bridge, and it stands next to the Kanaya Hotel History House – a historic landmark newly opened to the public in March 2015.

It is open from 9 am to serve tasty breakfast sets including eggs (fried or scrambled), bacon, toast, quiche, juice and coffee or tea (free refill).

Sugi-senko (Japanese cedar incense sticks)

Tochigi prefecture has several traditional craft products, and one of them is Sugi-senko, Japanese cedar incense sticks.

It is said that this incense sticks were created in 1864, when Adachi Shigeshichi produced stick incense from Japanese cedar leaves in what is now Nikko City. This cedar was widely available in the area, which helped the industry to flourish.

What makes Sugi-senko special is their natural cedar aroma, and the main ingredient is Japanese cedar leaves ground to a powder using a water wheel.

Azuma

Right in front of Tobu Nikko Station you fill find Azuma, a restaurant located on the second floor.

They offer different types of soba and snacks, and since it’s really close to the station it’s a good place to stop and eat before going back home after a long day of walking around Nikko.

They also serve Nikko famous yuba (tofu skin) in interesting ways suck as yuba croquette and dumplings, very delicious!

Nikko Castella

Ya probaron el delicioso Nikko Castella? Ubicada a sólo unos metros de Nikko Base se encuentra la tienda principal, donde se puede comprar este tradicional pastel.

Se caracteriza por estar preparado con miel, jarabe de arroz glutinoso y copos de oro comestible, con lo cual el resultado final es un húmedo, esponjoso y suave pastel.

Vienen en diferentes presentaciones y empacados en una caja con la cresta de la familia, siendo de esta manera un regalo idea para llevar de vuelta a casa luego de pasear por Nikko.

This little shop is perfect to hide from Nikko’s crowds.

Good for lunch, teatime or dinner, as they also open at night, you should try Bell Cafe‘s “monk’s diet” (special soy milk skin set) or the many cakes, sweets and coffee.

Kakigori

Llegan los días de calor, ideales para comer kakigori.

Este hielo raspado es particularmente delicioso en Nikko, donde se puede degustar este postre hecho con hielo natural de las montañas de la región. Acompañando con diferentes salsas (té verde, leche condensada, etc.) es el postre perfecto para esta temporada!

Original Yuba Soba Restaurant

Only 12 minutes away from Nikko Tobu Station is Uoyou, a delicious local soba restaurant.

They grind Nikko’s local buckwheat (Gensoba) on their own millstone in the restaurant, and they serve Yuba (tofu skin) in 3 different styles: fried and rolled, dried tofu wrapped in yuba, and zenmai (the young leaves of an osmund fern) wrapped in yuba.

Also, their Warabi Soba (bracken soba) season has started, so don’t miss it!
