Llegan los días de calor, ideales para comer kakigori.

Este hielo raspado es particularmente delicioso en Nikko, donde se puede degustar este postre hecho con hielo natural de las montañas de la región. Acompañando con diferentes salsas (té verde, leche condensada, etc.) es el postre perfecto para esta temporada!

Original Yuba Soba Restaurant

Only 12 minutes away from Nikko Tobu Station is Uoyou, a delicious local soba restaurant.

They grind Nikko’s local buckwheat (Gensoba) on their own millstone in the restaurant, and they serve Yuba (tofu skin) in 3 different styles: fried and rolled, dried tofu wrapped in yuba, and zenmai (the young leaves of an osmund fern) wrapped in yuba.

Also, their Warabi Soba (bracken soba) season has started, so don’t miss it!

Hongu Cafe

Located at the entrance to the main area of the world heritage, amongst the trees, you will find this cozy and enchanting little cafe.

Perfectly located for lunch or a coffee break while visiting the shrines and temples of Nikko, Hongu Cafe will surprise you. The menu is short but delicious, and the staff is friendly and attentive.

Kakigori

Hot days are coming, have you tried Nikko’s kakigori?

This shaved ice made using water from Nikko’s natural spring water will melt in your mouth, and together with the various flavors of syrup offered it makes a perfectly light dessert.

It can only be found in a few shops, for example at the famous Nikko Coffee.

Yuba Sashimi

We have already shared with you delicious dishes made of yuba.

Yuba, or tofu skin, is made from a film formed on the surface of boiled soy milk. And yuba sashimi is a perfect way of eating raw yuba.

Many different restaurants offer them in Nikko area, as a separate dish or as part of a menu (usually a vegetarian set).

Nikko Maitake Mushroom

Nikko maitake mushrooms are grown at the feet of Nikko Mountains. Thanks to Nikko’s natural environment and techniques used, these mushrooms are excellent in texture and flavor, and one of the best maitake mushroom bred in Japan.

There are several stores and restaurants where you can find them in Nikko, but you can eat delicious fried maitake mushrooms at Steakhouse Mihashi, next to Kanaya Hotel and Shinkyo Bridge.
Mihashi is one of the few steakhouses in Tochigi Prefecture that serves the “Tochigi Wagyu”, so you can try the maitake mushroom and also their unique steaks.

The Japanese National Parks Painting Collection

The Kosugi Hiroaki Memorial Museum of Art is located really close to Shinkyo Bridge, and from May 18 to July 7 you can enjoy The Japanese National Parks Painting Collection.

This is one of Japan’s leading landscape art collections, produced by artists representing modern Japanese Western paintings. It includes members of the National Medal of Culture, of the Cultural Arts Foundation, and of the Japan Art Academy. The individuality of each painter are well represented, and it is possible to trace the flow of modern Japanese Western painting history.

In this exhibition you will feel the richness and diversity of nature in Japan through the landscape paintings drawn by the masters.

Additionally, you can also visit their tearoom ‘Café en Rêve’ and have a break for tea, coffee or delicious desserts.

Reitaisai at Toshogu Shrine

Today, the Reitaisai was held at Toshogu Shrine. At 11:15am the Portable Shrine Procession (Mikoshi togyo sai) started. It is referred to as the procession of 1,000 Samurai and it included over 1,200 attendants divided into 53 categories, including warriors in armor who escorted the portable shrines to the Sojourn Hall.

Also, special food offerings were made, and other activities such as Sacred Artistic Rites performed by Eight Shrine Maidens and incantations read by the Chief Priest were performed.

The ceremony ended when the procession returned to Toshogu Shrine.

Did you miss it? You can see it again on October 17th, but in the meantime here are some picture we took today.

Yakisoba delicioso!

A tan sólo 10 minutos caminando desde la estación de Tobu Nikko se encuentra Akinoya, un restaurant de Yakisoba (fideos fritos).

El personal es muy amable y la comida es deliciosa. Cuentan con algunos platos para vegetarianos, menú especial al mediodía y también venden para llevar. Todo eso lo hace un lugar muy recomendable!

Monkey Ningyoyaki at Mishimaya

You may know the famous ‘See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil’ Three Wise Monkeys sculptures at Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. At Mishiyama, just a few minutes away from Tobu Nikko Station, you can find these cute monkeys made of delicious baked dough, filled with sweet bean paste.

They also sell other shapes of Nikko popular things and places, such as Toshogu or the Sleeping Cat. It’s the perfect souvenir! (Just remember to eat them within 3 days after buying them)
