The Reitaisai (Grand Festival) will be held next May 17 and 18 at Toshogu Shrine, so you shouldn’t miss it if you are in the area!
From 10 in the morning on May 17, a ceremony is held at the shrine in the presence of the head of the Tokugawa family, Sanshikai officials, and other dignitaries and guests.
From 1pm, archery on horseback is be performed in a special area, and in the evening three portable shrines are brought to Futarasan Shrine and the Yoinari-sai (Evening Arrival Ceremony) is conducted by priests from both shrines.
On May 18, the Portable Shrine Procession (Mikoshi togyo sai) will start at 11am. It is referred to as the procession of 1,000 Samurai and it includes over 1,200 attendants divided into 53 categories, including warriors in armor who will escort the portable shrines to the Sojourn Hall.
Also, special food offerings will be made, and other activities such as Sacred Artistic Rites performed by Eight Shrine Maidens and incantations read by the Chief Priest will be performed.
The ceremony will end when the procession returns to Toshogu Shrine.

Have you ever tried yuba (soy milk skin)? Then how about yuba burger?
Really near Toshogu you will find Maruhide. Even though it may not look super fancy from the outside, you will find this restaurant very appealing. Try their yuba burger in any of the 2 options offered -fried or teriyaki style-, delicious and vegetarian friendly! You can also enjoy their famous tomato yuba ramen, or any of the many dishes served.
Friendly staff, plenty amount of tables and menu in English with pictures make it a good option for a lunch break.

Se termina el Golden Week… pero antes de regresar, por qué no probar Komekichi Kozushi?
Este pequeño restaurant familiar, ubicado a pocos metros de la estación de tren de Tōbu Nikko, ofrece deliciosas opciones para todos los paladares. También sirven piezas a base del popular yuba de Nikko y opciones para vegetarianos.
Cuentan con menú en inglés, y el staff es muy amigable y no dudarán en ayudarlos con dudas sobre las diferentes piezas, y hasta etiqueta a la hora de comer sushi. Realmente vale la pena!

Kanman no chaya
Justo en la entrada de kanman ha Fuchi donde se encuentra un pequeño local en donde se puede escapar de la congestión de los días nacionales feriados.
No es muy grande el lugar pero ofrece unos varados platos de noodles y postres que vienen bien al paladar.
Esta semana bien llamada golden week esta llena de gente y la mayor parte de los restaurantes están llenos.
Este pequeño lugar es recomendable para aquellos que quieren alejarse de la multitud y del trajín de esperar para comer algo.

Youkan
Caminando desde las estaciones de tren de Nikko por la calle principal hacia el puente Shinkyo y Toshogu, se pueden encontrar muchos locales de venta de Youkan.
El youkan (羊羹) es un postre hecho con anko (pasta endulzada de porotos azuki), agar-agar y azúcar. Suele venderse con forma de bloques en sus dos variedades principales: neri youkan y mizu youkan. Mizu significa agua y esto indica que este tipo de youkan tiene más de la habitual, por lo que suele refrigerarse y comerse en verano.
También existen otras variedades como el shio youkan, que contiene pequeñas cantidades de sal, o el matcha youkan hecho con té verde.
Actualmente es uno de los dulces japoneses más populares que ha evolucionado desde el periodo Edo a medida que se difundió el uso del azúcar.
Como puede almacenarse durante largos periodos de tiempo sin necesidad de refrigeración si no se abre, es un muy buen regalo para llevar como souvenir de Nikko. Si bien la receta básica es la misma, cada tienda tiene su textura y sabor particular, así que no se pierdan la oportunidad de visitarlas y descubrir los distintos youkan! (detalles abajo)

If you’re in Nikko and would like to try something sweet but not sure where to find vegan desserts, you have to visit Yuzawaya!
Their mizu-youkan sundae is delicious: made of sweet soft aduki bean jelly and soy milk ice cream, it’s great to eat after lunch or as a refreshing power snack after a day walking around Nikko.
They also serve different desserts for everyone to taste, like their popular sake manju created 200 years ago.
You can enjoy all this in the cafe right next to their shop.
